Plan the holiday gifts, safe from the kid who borrows your phone

With ChatGPT · 10 min · Easy

✓ Tested Oct 28 on free ChatGPT · web

What you’re doing
Your eight-year-old grabs your phone for a game, and the gift list is sitting right there in your chats. Plan every gift with ChatGPT, keep it under budget, then lock the chat so it drops out of your chat list. Grandparents with a long list can use it too.

New this month: ChatGPT can lock a chat behind a 4-digit PIN, or Face ID on supported phones. It’s rolling out to the free plan too, so you may not see it yet.

Makes A gift plan nobody peeks at

You’ll end up with
Two ideas for each person on your list, a rough price for each, and one checklist that stays under your budget.

You need

☐  ChatGPT on your phone or at chatgpt.com. Locking a chat needs a free account.

☐  Your list of names and a total budget

Steps

Step 1
Tap the button below, or open ChatGPT and paste the prompt.

Step 2
Answer its questions: who, how old, what they’re into, and how much you can spend.

Step 3
To hide it, tap ••• on the chat, then Lock chat, and make a 4-digit PIN. Find it later under Projects, then Locked chats.

The prompt
Help me plan holiday gifts on a budget. First ask me who I am buying for, how old they are, what they are into, and my total budget. Then suggest two gift ideas per person with a rough price, keep the total under my budget, and end with one checklist I can tick off.

What good looks like
It asks its questions first, then gives two ideas per person, with prices that add up to less than your budget.

If it goes wrong
Prices look off? Ask “Check these prices and suggest cheaper swaps.” Pick a PIN you’ll remember: resetting a forgotten PIN deletes every locked chat for good. Locking hides the chat, but it isn’t a vault.

Free. Locking a chat needs a free account.

Turn that pile of school emails into one calm list for the week

With ChatGPT · 5 min · Easy

✓ Tested Oct 28 on free ChatGPT · web

What you’re doing
Picture day, a field trip form and a bake sale, all buried in long emails. Paste one into ChatGPT and get back a short list of what’s happening, when, and what needs your signature. Working parents can do it between calls.

New on Oct 27: if your email is iCloud Mail, you can now connect it to ChatGPT on any plan, on iPhone, the web or the desktop app, so it can find those emails for you.

Makes One list instead of five emails

You’ll end up with
A short checklist with the dates first, so nothing sneaks up on you Friday morning.

You need

☐  ChatGPT on your phone or at chatgpt.com

☐  A school email you can copy. Take out your child’s full name first if you like.

Steps

Step 1
Open the school email, press and hold the text, and copy it.

Step 2
Tap the button below, paste the email under the prompt, and send.

Step 3
Add the dates to your calendar, or screenshot the list for the fridge.

The prompt
Turn the school email below into a short checklist for this week. List every date and time first, then what to bring or pay, then anything I need to sign or reply to. Only use what the email says, and tell me if something is unclear.

Using iCloud Mail?
Let ChatGPT find the emails itself. In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Plugins, and pick iCloud Mail. It asks for an Apple app-specific password, which you make at account.apple.com under Sign-In and Security. Never type your regular Apple password. Then send this:

The prompt
@iCloud Mail Find the emails from my kid's school from the last 7 days. List every date and time, what to bring, and anything I need to sign. Do not reply to, move or delete any email.

Cook’s note
ChatGPT can misread a date now and then. Check anything with a deadline against the email before it goes on the calendar.

Free. iCloud Mail needs a ChatGPT account and two-factor sign-in on your Apple Account.

Get homework help that explains, without handing over the answer

With Gemini · 5 min

Your fifth grader wants the answer. You want them to learn it. Gemini’s new Customize menu lets you save a skill, a set of standing instructions it can use in any chat. Skills don’t need a paid plan, and they’re for adults 18 and up. Paste this into Gemini once. At homework time, type / and pick the skill.

The prompt
Create a skill based on these instructions: When I ask for help with my child's homework, explain one small step at a time in plain words, ask my child a question before each next step, and never give the final answer.

Write the weekly update for your kid’s team, and give the coach a break

✓ Tested Oct 28 on free ChatGPT · web

With ChatGPT · A favor for the coach

Step 1
Most kids’ teams and clubs have a leader buried in group texts. Offer to send the families one clear update each week.

Step 2
Offer it as a favor, and get the leader’s OK on every update before it goes out. It takes about 15 minutes a week.

Step 3
Ask for the leader’s notes, paste them under the prompt in ChatGPT, and send the draft back for a thumbs-up.

The prompt
Turn the notes below into a short, friendly weekly update for the families on a kids' sports team. Keep it under 120 words, put each date and time on its own line, and end with who to contact with questions. Do not add anything that is not in my notes.

Use first names only, and never share kids’ photos or addresses without a parent’s OK.
